StaticOwl in ChatGPT

What this gives you: StaticOwl wired into ChatGPT as a custom connector. You ask in the chat, and ChatGPT works on your live site — list your sites, design content types, create and edit pages, manage releases, and run builds.
You add StaticOwl as a custom connector, then sign in through your browser when prompted. There is no key to copy or paste, no bridge process, and no config token.
Add the connector
- Open ChatGPT Settings → Connectors. Custom connectors are available on plans that support them; some accounts enable them under Developer mode.
- Add a custom connector and paste the URL:
https://app.staticowl.com/api/mcp - Sign in to StaticOwl when prompted.
- Turn the connector on in a chat, then ask ChatGPT to list your sites.
Once sign-in finishes, start a chat and ask ChatGPT to list your sites to confirm the connection:
Use the StaticOwl connector to list my sites and show me the content types on the first one.
Choose your toolset
StaticOwl exposes 334 tools across 12 toolsets. When you add the connector, pick a preset:
- core — a tight starter set.
- recommended — the default: the day-to-day tools. This fits most people.
- all — the full 334.
The 12 toolsets group tools by the work they do: sites; content; content types; templates & themes; media; SEO; internal links; builds & releases; domains & redirects; forms & integrations; authoring; and access & workflow.
What you can do
Ask in plain language. For example:
- Create a page titled "Getting started" and add it to the docs section.
- Publish the pricing page and run a build.
- Run an SEO audit on the home page and list what to fix.
- Add a redirect from /old-pricing to /pricing.
- Upload this image and write alt text for it.
If you have more than one site, tell ChatGPT which one to work on, or set a default:
Set my default StaticOwl site to the one named "Acme Docs", then create a new page titled "Getting started".
Safe by design
ChatGPT works through the same steps a person does. Edits start as drafts. Content goes live only when it is published and the site is built. Changes keep history, and a build can be rolled back. You decide what gets published.
FAQ
Do I need an API key?
No. You paste the connector URL and sign in to StaticOwl in your browser, then click Allow. There's nothing to copy or paste — ChatGPT registers itself and signs in over OAuth.
Do I need a StaticOwl account?
Yes. Sign in with your StaticOwl account when the connector prompts you. If you don't have one yet, create it at app.staticowl.com and then add the connector.
Is it the same tool set as Claude?
Yes. Other MCP clients talk to the same endpoint, so the tools, your access rules, and workflow gates apply the same way — whether you work in Claude or ChatGPT.
